William Butler | History of SC Slide Collection

William Butler (1759-1821) served as a captain in the Revolutionary War and a major general in the War of 1812. Like many backcountry residents, he strongly opposed the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788, and was an anti-federalist. He served as a Republican Representative of the Ninety Six District in the U.S. Congress from 1801-1813.
