Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee | History of SC Slide Collection

Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee (1756-1818), a native Virginian, helped to gain an important American victory at the Battle of Eutaw Springs in September 1781. Appointed a Captain in the Virginia cavalry, he joined George Washington's army in 1777, and in 1779 was placed in charge of a cavalry unit that became known as Lee's Legions. When the British offensive strategy shifted toward the South in 1780, Lee's forces became an important resource in the American defense. Engraving by J. Herring after a painting by Gilbert Stuart.
