Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809), the grandson of Huguenot immigrants, was a member of one of the richest pre-Revolutionary families in South Carolina. A rice planter, he studied law in London, but became one of Charleston's gentleman architects. He married Margaret Izard in 1785, providing an example of the linking of South Carolina's wealthiest families through ties of marriage. Miniature by Walter Robertson (1750-1802).
