Mordecai Cohen (1763-1848) was born in Poland, but amassed extensive real estate holdings in Charleston after the Revolution. A planter and philanthropist, he served as Commissioner of the Poor House from 1811-1818, and was Commissioner of the Orphan House from 1838-1844 (see The Charleston Orphan House). This painting by Theodore Sidney Moise (1806-1883) was painted about 1835.
