Woods Bay State Natural Area is located in Olanta, SC. This area is considered a wetland and is a "Carolina bay." A Carolina bay is a depression in the earth's surface of unknown origin. This depression is thought to have been around for millions of years, and it is not known how it was formed. Most of these are located in North and South Carolina, and there are about 2500 in South Carolina. They range in aize from an acre to several thousand acres.
In Woods Bay, there is a unique ecosystem that includes about 45 different reptiles and amphibians. There are over 75 species of birds.
