When Richard Pearis established a home in the Greenville area around 1770, it was all Native American hunting ground and there were very few European settlers. He is considered the first resident of the Greenville area. Pearis traded with the Native Americans and worked for the colonial government, because they wanted to establish trade with the Cherokees in the Upcountry.
