On January 10, 2003, the South’s oldest daily newspaper, The Charleston Post and Courier, celebrates an important milestone: their bicentennial. This newspaper has reported on war, struggles, natural disasters, and has taken stands in important issues.
This first segment focuses on Charleston’s early history, going back to the days of the English Lords Proprietors. Charlestowne grew to be the fourth largest city in the colonies. Charleston was a city of newspapers, or “gazettes” as they were called before. The South Carolina Gazette was the first widely circulated newspaper in South Carolina.
