In 1844, William S. King took over as editor of the Courier, and revolutionized the newspaper by employing a new technology for instantly receiving information: the telegraph. He also established a “Pony Express” to quickly transport news between the East and West coast.
The Charleston Courier and The Charleston Mercury both reported on the rising tensions between the North and South, leading up to The Civil War. News of engagements, and casualties regularly flowed in to the papers.
