A former public school teacher in New York City, Joyce Hansen writes contemporary novels, as well as historical fiction, exploring the African American experience. The Gift Giver was her first children’s book, published in 1980. It was inspired by her own Bronze childhood and by her students. She now lives in South Carolina and writing is her full-time profession.
