(Rana sylvatica)

This medium sized frog is primarily a northern species with its most southerly distribution associated with the cove forests of the mountain of SC. It is ieasily identifiied by its dark mask extending back from the eye. The wood frog is one of the earliest breeders laying eggs at times with snow on the ground. An unusual adaptation associated with this species is its ability to freeze and thaw without detrimental effects.
