(Ambystoma maculatum)
The spotted salamander is one of the most colorful of the ambystomid salamanders. The shiny black back of the animal has a series of large yellow/yellow orange spots. These salamanders are one of the earliest breeders - laying eggs in February with ice sometimes present. The adults are terrestrial and spend much of their time foraging for insects and worms underground (fossorial).
