The primary and most visible impact of climate change is the accelerated increase of sea levels. Localized flooding has always been a problem for citizens in Charleston and Beaufort, with impacts such as flooded roads, and property damage. If measures are not taken to improve the infrastructure of these areas where flooding takes place, then nuisance flooding could potentially develop into flash floods. Discussing the issue of rising tides has been a hot-button topic for decades, but Hurricane Matthew is seen as the tipping point for opening the debate for combating climate change.
