The Yellow Jessamine is the official State Flower of South Carolina, and the Carolina Wren, the State Bird. Recognition of the wren was unofficial until 1948, when the legislature passed an act repealing a 1939 statute that had named the mockingbird as the state bird, replacing it with the Carolina Wren. The wren, a little smaller than an English sparrow, has a reddish back and lighter breast; it has black bars on its tail, and a white stripe over its eyes. The Jessamine (sometimes called "Jasmine") has a sweet fragrance.
