Georgia O’Keeffe was born on a large dairy farm outside of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on November 15, 1887. She spent her youth in Wisconsin and Virginia. By the eighth grade, Georgia knew very definitely that she would be an artist. She realized that she could say things with color and shapes that she couldn’t say in any other way. As a young adult, O’Keeffe took a position teaching art at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. She married photographer and gallery owner, Alfred Stieglitz, and moved with him to New York. The artist, renowned for her images of gigantic flowers, cityscapes, and distinctive desert scenes, settled permanently in New Mexico in 1946.
