J.L. Green on a method for trapping fish with rubber tires.Lying in the Lower Piedmont of South Carolina’s Upstate, Greenwood County resulted from a merger of Abbeville and Edgefield counties in 1897. Greenwood County was named after its county seat, and the county seat’s name honors area local John McGehee’s plantation.
The county’s railroad augmented the rise of cotton growing and the textile manufacturing industry in the county. Food processing, life science, and advanced materials lead the county’s economy today. The county is also known as the home of Lander University, a small public university, and Lake Greenwood.
