Berkeley County is located in the Lowcountry, with its county seat in Moncks Corner. The area features a number of rivers and lakes that make it popular with tourists. History also draws many visitors to Berkeley County. A great deal of historical sites and museums exist in Berkeley, and the county was the home of Revolutionary War generals Francis Marion and William Moultrie.
The county was first established in 1682. However, the Charleston District absorbed Berkeley County for a few years before becoming its own county once more in 1882. The county’s namesakes, Sir William Berkeley and Lord John Berkeley, served as Lords Proprietors of Carolina.
