Rural Humanities II
ABBEVILLE, GREENWOOD, AND MCCORMICK COUNTIES
May through August of 1988, McKissick Museum initiated a folklife survey of four South Carolina counties: Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, and Edgefield. This four-county region of the state is almost wholly rural, with a agricultural history that runs deep. Rolling pastureland is dotted with small ponds and criss-crossed with creeks. The Savannah River lies directly west of all four counties.
Rich music traditions and a wealth of basket weavers, woodcarvers, and sprawling peach orchards call this region home. Unless otherwise noted, all interviews and photographs by Anne Kimzey.
