While her first three novels are mainly about contemporary family life in the South, her fourth, Nowhere Else on Earth, is an historical novel based on a true story from the Civil War. Rich in Love, her best-known novel, was made into a film in 1993 starring Albert Finney and Jill Clayburgh.
