Brian Rust's Earthen Cycle creates visual interest and a place of retreat in an otherwise overlooked stretch of grass connecting two parking lots. A Natural State visited Rust as he installed the site-specific sculpture for Sumter's Accessibility 2004 Arts Festival. Its rammed earth walls, and cement and clay spheres continue to invite viewers to sit, interact, and reflect on the work. Like Earthen Bridge, a site-specific sculpture Rust built for the Clemson Nature-Based Sculpture Program, materials are prone to erosion and the structure is intended as an "extended ephemeral" work.
