A native of Spartanburg, Ben Greer graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his M.A. in Creative Writing from Hollins University. His first book of fiction, Slammer, was published in 1975 when he was twenty-six. This novel, based upon his experiences in a maximum security prison, received rave reviews and his subsequent three novels were extensively reviewed. He served as a media advisor for both Democratic and Republican governors and taught at the University of South Carolina for 33 years.
