- Leaves colored at top with red-purple veins on white background
- Topped by erect, roundish hood with wavy margin
- Fiddle-shaped 5 - 7.5 cm (2 - 3 inches) flowers with 5 petals
- Stigma distinctive, forming large, red-green umbrella-like structure at flower's center
- Insects and other small organisms attracted to colorful leaves and nectar
- Lives in sandy bogs
