• Member of the Pea family
• Grows from 20 to 40 feet with a trunk 10 to 12 feet in diameter
• Heart-shaped leaves are 2 to 6 inches long
• Flowers appear before leaves
• Flowers range in color from pink to purple
• Habitat includes hillsides, woods and roadsides
