This episode introduces the student to the social history of South Carolina, the rise of Charleston as an important shipping center, and the building of the fort where the Civil War began. It further describes the political divisions that set the stage for the war. [These events are seen through the eyes of young Samuel, an Irish immigrant boy whose father is one of the workers building Fort Sumter.]
