Gene Martin is the Chief of the Chicora tribe of Horry and Georgetown Counties. Their tribe is considered an Indian Association. They are protesting the replica of the Christopher Columbus ship, the Niña. Although the Chicora tribe does receive some meager federal benefits for their Indian ancestry, that ancestry is officially ignored by the state. The Chief points to his hunting and fishing licenses, which identify him as "other" because South Carolina does not acknowledge the Chicora. The State of South Carolina acknowledges only Catawba Indians.
