South Carolina's 187 miles of coast is enjoyed by millions year round and Kelly Thorvalson of the South Carolina Aquarium is here to protect it. Thorvalson has one of the most unique jobs in the world...to nurse sick and injured sea turtles back to health.
The Sea Turtle Hospital at the South Carolina Aquarium is a Southeast one-of-a-kind operation. The staff often works nights, weekends, holidays and they are always on-call in case of a turtle stranding.
The video includes suggestions about what human beings can do to keep sea turtles safe from risks that are preventable, including their accidental ingestion of plastics that are found in the ocean or on the beach, boat strikes, and being entangled in fishing gear and fishing line. The sea turtle hospital at the South Carolina Aquarium does allow tours of the facility.
