Peachtree Rock is the edge of the old ocean, located just twenty miles west of Columbia, S.C. This area is part of the “Sandhills” part of the southeastern United States.
Fall Line Sandhills- at this first stop, Longleaf pine trees and Turkey Oak trees dominate the area. Some leaves on the oak tree feature tumor-like growths called “galls.” This is due to insects which have laid eggs in the leaves, most likely wasps. Poison Oak is a common poisonous plant which grows in the area. And nearby, Rudy and Jim come across a large Writing spider resting in its web.
