Remember to wear your work gloves when cleaning up the branches and vines. You can actually use willow for the spokes of your basket, and follow up with another type of vine, such as Virginia Creeper. The materials you use might be different, but the techniques will be the same. To learn more about alternative materials you can use for making your basket, please visit the Workshop on Kudzu Basket Weaving, and view the Additional Resources on the final page of workshop directions for Kudzu Basket Weaving. Also see the additional Resources and Workshop links below. Remember, if you see a vine that you might like to use, make sure that it isn't poison oak or ivy.
