Inducted into the South Carolina Hall Of Fame, Charles Duke, Jr. is one of only twelve people to ever walk on the Moon as part of the historic Apollo 16 mission in 1972.

Charles Moss "Charlie" Duke, Jr.  was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 3, 1935. He attended Lancaster High School in Lancaster, South Carolina. In 1953, he graduated as valedictorian from Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned its highest rank, Eagle Scout. Duke received a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Sciences from the United States Naval Academy in 1957, and a Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964.
