Here in the Upstate,
C is for Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway.
00:07
§
The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway
00:09
begins, appropriately enough, in Cherokee
County.
00:12
Right near the town of Gaffney, the Highway
11 corridor
00:16
is completely covered with peach orchards
on both sides for many miles.
00:20
As you move several miles
down toward the Greenville County section,
00:25
the Tryon-Landrum area is noted horse country.
Lots of fox hounds and horse-training stables
00:33
in that area.
The mountains of South Carolina
00:37
are being changed in a really profound way.
Development is encroaching from virtually
00:42
every direction.
But we're fortunate here in Pickens County
00:46
to have been able to preserve somewhere around
50,000 acres
00:49
that will remain in a wild state forever.
There's an old Cherokee legend
00:55
that goes with the name of Table Rock.
The legend says there was a Cherokee chieftain
01:01
who was such a giant
that he used the top of the mountain as a
01:06
table.
And the little knobby mountain adjacent to
01:09
Table Rock
is called The Stool
01:10
because that's where the chief sat down to
take meals.
01:14
So that's Table Rock.
And not far from Table Rock is Caesars Head.
01:19
There are two versions of that story.
The one I've heard since I was a kid
01:24
was that there is a rock outcropping on Caesars
Head
01:28
that somebody at some time
thought resembled the Roman emperor Julius
01:32
Caesar.
The other explanation, sometime in the 1800s,
01:37
one of the huntsmen in this area
was running the dogs after some game--
01:41
deer, bear, wild hogs, or something--
and the whole parade fell off the cliff at
01:55
Sassafras Mountain, located just north of
Table Rock,
01:57
is one of the most interesting natural features
in South Carolina.
02:01
It's not only located right on the Eastern
Continental Divide
02:04
and divides North and South Carolina,
but it's also the highest point in South Carolina.
02:10
And this is really interesting.
Any rainfall that falls on Sassafras Mountain
02:16
could end up
in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico,
02:19
depending on which side of the mountain it
drains off of.
02:24
We look forward to seeing you in the Upstate
of South Carolina.
