Red Cedar | The Salt Marsh
Red cedar is an aromatic, evergreen, small tree with prickly needles. Cedar produces an aromatic oil that prevents attack by fungi, and the wood does not rot. The durable wood is used for shingles and fence posts. The oil also discourages attack by insects, and clothing stored in cedar chests is safe from the attacks of clothes moths. The Eastern red cedar was used in the past to make eaded pencils, but it is rarely used for that purpose today. Cedar waxwings are birds so named because they eat the cones of cedar trees; they also eat other types of berries.
