The painted bunting has been called the most beautiful bird in North America. The male is colored in unbelievable hues of bright green, blue, and red. The female is a pretty, light green. The birds nest in the shrub thickets of barrier islands and the mainland, often very close to the salt marsh. They migrate to South America for the winter.
