At the age of 18, Dr. King was ordained. He continued his education in religion, eventually earning a doctorate from Boston University in 1955.
While he was in college, one of his heroes was a man named Mahatma Gandhi. Although Gandhi's country of India was upset by violence, he used only nonviolent methods to make change. Gandhi believed in equality and freedom through civil rights for the Indian people. Civil rights ensured that all people had the same opportunities and treatment under the law.
