The Ben and Sue Williams’ Family Reunion in Varnville, S.C. is a large affair where people come from all around to taste the famous Williams’ hash. This is a hogshead/liver mix hash cooked without variation for almost thirty years by Willie Lee “Huddie” Williams. Preparation of the hash requires twelve hours of cooking so that the preliminaries are already going on when family members from across the U.S. begin arriving the afternoon of July 3rd each year. The aroma of the hash cooking all night with its special seasonings lingers into the morning of July 4th with all events leading up to the dinner where hash served over rice is the centerpiece. In addition to being featured in the documentary Carolina Hash: A Taste of South Carolina, Willie Lee “Huddie” Williams received a Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award in 2001.
