A tennis game in progress at the Highland Park Hotel in 1890. A note on the back of this photograph, written long afterward when sports clothing for women had changed dramatically, asked a young relative, "How do these costumes compare with shorts in suitability? It's a wonder we didn't all break our necks!" The tennis players are Sarah K. Smith (left, with racquet--the writer of the note above), her partner Mr. Dykeman, Helen Griffith Powell (at net), and Edith Powers (at the far right).
