Although it did not draw crowds like those of today until after the widespread use of the automobile and the improvement of roads, the South Carolina coastal area has long been an important lure bringing visitors to the state. Even before bridges linked the Isle of Palms to the mainland, hotels and amusements, like the Ferris wheel in this postcard view in 1911, were a part of a visit to the beach.
