Mrs. Mamie Norris Tillman, an active member of the Edgefield chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as a founder of the Edgefield County Historical Society, helps to dedicate an historical marker in 1917, commemorating the Cherokee Ford crossing of the Keowa Native American Trail. Historical and hereditary societies rose in importance for middle class women at the end of the 19th and into the 20th century.
