The Main Street of Lexington, sometime before a devastating fire in 1916 burned many of the business district buildings seen here. The county seat of Lexington County, the area was first settled by Swiss and Germans. Later, Scotch-Irish settlers from Pennsylvania did not change the German character of the county seat, where German was spoken until well into the 20th century.
