Larry Klein has been host of the SC Educational Radio program “The Bluegrass Sound” since 1989. Working with the show’s creator and producer, Clarence Dreher, Dr. Klein has faithfully compiled hour-long radio programs that are broadcast across our state on the SC Educational Radio Network. Larry comes to South Carolina by way of Buffalo, New York through his work as a dermatologist, pathologist, and Director of Columbia Dermatopathy. Dr. Klein uses “The Bluegrass Sound” to not only highlight the latest in bluegrass music, but as an educational tool for interested individuals. His dedication to bluegrass music in South Carolina is evident through a statement by the late bluegrass legend Pappy Sherrill. Mr. Sherrill states, “He is a walking encyclopedia on who’s who in bluegrass and old time country music. I know of no one who can come close to his knowledge of this traditional South Carolina music.”
In addition to hosting “The Bluegrass Sound,” Dr. Klein is an active member of the International Bluegrass Music Association and past president and a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Bluegrass & Traditional Music Association. Larry also plays dobro with Bill Wells & The Blue Ridge Mountain Grass of West Columbia. Klein received the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award in 2004.
