The Johnson Rifles | History of SC Slide Collection

Union County's most famous military organization was "The Johnson Rifles." Named in honor of Governor David Johnson, these riflemen were the first South Carolinians to report for duty in the Mexican War. They also fought in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. This photograph was taken when they were sent to guard the Mexican border during the troubles over that border in 1916.
