South Carolina played a big part in the creation of Latin Jazz!
From Sabor, we learned that Latin jazz music has roots right here in South Carolina. Dizzy Gillespie, a famous jazz trumpet player from Cheraw, loved the music of Cuba. The popular sound coming out of Cuba in the 1920s and 1930s was called "rumba." It was dance music that included a lot of percussion instruments, in particular, the congas.
