Chain Gangs Carrying Out Road Work | History Of SC Slide Collection

Road work in South Carolina was carried out in the early 20th century by convicts working in chain gangs. Here, a gang works under the careful eye of a guard; the vehicle that transported them to the work site and served as their housing while they were on the job is in the background. U.S. Bureau of Public Roads photograph, around 1910.
