The Green has long served as a meeting place and celebration site for St. Helena Island's African American residents. Such activities as Emancipation Day, celebrating the adoption of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863; the annual Farmers Fair; Labor Day celebrations; and community sings were held all or in part at the Green. The Green is also now known as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
