Josefa Martinez (Sewing)
Sewing and cooking
Ms. Josefa Martinez learned many traditional art forms from her mother in Jalisco, Mexico. She learned how to sew, make nativity scenes, cook tamales, and how to embroider. Though she now lives in Lexington County, South Carolina, she carries on and preserves these traditions. She began learning when she was just five years old and now teaches and shares these arts with the community and her family. She makes traditional dresses for a folk dancing group and her nativity scenes are displayed at a local church.
