Louise Miller Cohen

Gullah/Geechee Storyteller

Ms. Louise Miller Cohen was born in Hilton Head, South Carolina and is a professional teaching artist and Gullah/Geechee storyteller. She speaks the Gullah language and learned the stories as well as the language from elders in her family. Family get-togethers as well as everyday communication immersed her in the culture. She has also passed the family tradition to her granddaughter and teaches her whenever she comes to visit. Ms. Miller Cohen also preserves the traditions of her culture by teaching at various school and church related events. She contributes to the Beaufort County community by keeping the language and stories alive at these events. Her associations are with the Beaufort County School System as well as the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
