Hewell Pottery, Gillsville, Banks County. Interview recorded with family members in June 1981.
The Hewell family potting dynasty began with Nathaniel H. Hewell (1832-1887). For years, the Hewell Pottery produced glazed utilitarian ware - jugs, crocks, and churns under the management of Maryland Hewell.
His sons Carl, Harold, and Jack transformed the pottery into one of the largest producers of unglazed garden ware in the region. Harold’s wife Grace was instrumental in ensuring the pottery’s survival and is one of the few traditional female turners in the state.
Her son Chester and grandsons Matthew and Nathaniel have returned to the traditional glazed pottery of Maryland’s era, producing face jugs, jars, and churns in addition to unglazed ware.
