The spring of 1863: African American troops are introduced into the Federal Army, forming the first three African American regiments, one of which is the legendary Massachusetts 54th Infantry. The Union sets its sights on one of Charleston’s most heavily armed fortifications: Battery Wagner, on Morris Island. The first few attempts to assault the fort end in disaster for the Union.
