Miller Pottery, Brent, Bibb County. Interview recorded June 1981.

Since the retirement of his father, the family pottery has been managed by this fourth generation potter. This Alabama potting dynasty was founded by Abraham Miller, who arrived in the region shortly after the Civil War.

Abraham worked for French potter Francis LaCoste and eventually married his daughter. They moved to northern Alabama and opened a shop in Perry County. The current Miller pottery was founded by Eric’s father in 1964.

Eric’s son, Steve Miller, now represents the fifth generation of active potters and hopes to pass the tradition on to his children. Once a large producer of unglazed ware, the Millers now turn a variety of glazed pottery.
