After the Revolutionary War, Pickens becomes known as the premiere negotiator with Native American Indians. Pickens, who originally established a reputation as an Indian fighter, emerges as a peace-maker, and someone the Cherokee felt they could trust. Pickens was one of the federal commissioners for the Treaty of Hopewell, which was one of the first peace treaties between the United States, and the Southern Native American tribes.  Pickens believed in order, and maintaining peace between the U.S. citizens, and the Native American nations, though the treaties were not without challenges.
