Organic materials such as pine needles are considered "free for the taking" and have qualities that can not be reproduced by humans. But collecting natural materials comes at a price for the environment if people do not conserve natural resources. Nancy uses basket making as a way to teach respect for the natural world while creating awareness for cultural tradition. The basket making tradition reveals our dependence on natural resources and connects the artist to landscape.
