A native of Charleston, which is also the setting of her novels, Rich in Love and The Fireman’s Fair, Josephine Humphreys was educated at Ashley Hall and studied creative writing at Duke University. She also attended Yale and the University of Texas, and, before she started her writing career in 1977, she taught English in Charleston.
